Personal Finance Interview With This Girl Talks Money

Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been speaking to a whole host of experts in the personal finance world.

This week we caught up with Ellie, a financial coach who’s on a mission to help ambitious millennials master their money.

We love that Ellie is changing the narrative around money, using her Instagram page to show millennials that you can successfully manage your finances, without having to sacrifice all the things you enjoy in life.

1) Hey Ellie! Can you please introduce yourself?

Of course! I’m Ellie, founder of This Girl Talks Money and financial content writer.

I live in SW London which I absolutely love, and you’ll usually find me on Instagram sharing my thoughts about the latest news which affects the pockets of millennials.

I’m very lucky that I love what I do!

2) What inspired you to create This Girl Talks Money?

Bored of the same old financial information written by old white men, I started This Girl Talks Money to open the conversation about money with other young, ambitious women who want to take control of their finances.

3) You describe yourself as a Millennial Money Coach. What do you think is the biggest challenge millennials face when it comes to their finances?

Where do you begin!? I think the biggest challenge is that we’re living in a completely new economic and political world to that of the generations before us.

Even if our parents taught us about managing money well, a lot of what they experienced when they were in their 20s and 30s is now so outdated.

There needs to be more easily accessible, user-friendly, and engaging content around finances from a young age!

4) Do you think your relationship with money has changed much over the years?

Oh 1000% – I used to spend spend spend without a thought about the future!

The amount I used to spend on shoes was frankly obscene, and through university, I prioritised nail extensions over supermarket shops. I had a good time though!

It took me starting full-time employment to really start thinking about money more carefully and to begin to ask questions, which led me down the path to where I am today.

5) If you found a suitcase with ÂŁ1M inside, what would you do?

I’d pay off my mortgage (which I’m very fortunate to have) which would take up a fair amount given where I live!

I’d give some to my family too, and I’d invest a hefty chunk too. Of course, there would be a bit of spending too!

6) And lastly, if you had to describe your finances using one emoji – what would it be and why?

All of my money this year has gone into buying & furnishing a flat, so it has to be this! đźŹˇ
