Are you looking to open a bank account with HSBC? We’ve got you covered! HSBC offers a few options tailored to your income or expenditure. Let’s get started with the first few steps.

1. What do I need?

Before you dive in, ensure you meet the basic eligibility requirements. HSBC require applicants to be at least 18 years old for current accounts. There are children’s bank accounts available but we’ll keep the focus here on the adult accounts.

To complete your application, you’ll need to provide proof of identity and proof of address. Here are some commonly accepted documents:

  • Proof of identity:
    • passport
    • driver’s license
    • EU identity card.
  • Proof of address:
    • Utility bill
    • Telephone bill
    • Council tax bill
    • Mortgage statement
    • Tenancy agreement

This step may require you to provide more than one proof of address. If you’re new to the UK, don’t worry; a letter from a university or employer may be acceptable.

2. Apply Online

HSBC offers a quick and convenient online application process through their official website. Head over to the bank account section and select the type of account you prefer. With 24/7 customer support, you can feel confident starting the application process.

3. Choose your Account

HSBC offers two main types of current accounts, and the best part is, none of them have monthly fees! Let’s take a closer look at the benefits:

HSBC Bank Account

  • Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay for easy and secure transactions.
  • Exclusive Home&Away discounts and rewards programme to save on your favourite activities.
  • Special customer-only products like our Regular Saver and Global Money Account.
  • 24/7 customer support, so help is always just a call away.

HSBC Advance Account

  • All the perks of the HSBC Bank Account
  • Emergency cash up to US$10,000 at any HSBC branch worldwide (with sufficient funds).
  • Fee-free international transfers between your HSBC accounts.
  • Global-View feature to view all your international HSBC accounts on one screen.

4. Approval & Get Going

After submitting your application, HSBC will review it and let you know once it’s approved. You’ll receive your account details and some helpful packs to make the most of your new bank account. Shortly after that, keep an eye out for your new card and PIN. Keep them safe while you get to use your account.

Empower yourself with the Emma App to enhance your financial management. With its quick and secure integration, you can connect your HSBC account and take advantage of features that HSBC may not offer such as rent reporting (to build your credit history) and savings pots (to separate your money).

Emma has many tools that help you track, manage and automate your finances but don’t just take my word for it, Emma gets great reviews and praise for its ability to help you take control of your finances.
