Mint is becoming Credit Karma, what does this mean for you?

For more than 15 years Mint has been a go-to for budgeters and the recent announcement that the much-loved platform is shutting down is a shock to its 3 million active users.

When Mint was first launched in 2007 it was one of the first platforms to allow users to aggregate all of their accounts in one place to simplify tracking their finances. Since then the platform has expanded and has become a go-to for not only aggregating accounts but also budgeting, bill tracking and offering users ways to save on loans, insurance and credit cards,

When Mint announced its impending closure on January 1st, 2024 they referred users to Credit Karma, another financial product that is also owned by INTUIT. Users, however, are skeptical as the two platforms offer very different services. Many have voiced their concerns on Reddit about what this means for their years of financial history that has been collected by Mint as well as how they will now budget.

Credit Karma focuses on tracking your credit score, not your day-to-day spending and does not have the same budgeting capabilities. This has left users wondering what is their best course of action.

Mint has already stated that its users can begin moving their financial account data to Credit Karma, including financial account balances, historical net worth, and three years of transactions. This still leaves the question of how to manage day-to-day finances as Mint has also stated that Credit Karma will not offer the ability to set monthly and category budgets.

Luckily other budgeting apps on the market can fill this void.

What is the best alternative to the Mint?

Budgeting Capabilities

With Emma, users can also add offline accounts to manually track within the app as well as connect investments and assets. With Emma, you even can create custom categories to ensure your budget is fully tailored to your lifestyle.

Insights & Analytics

Another way Mint and Emma are similar is the personalized insights and analytics that each provides. Users can view the trends of their income, spending, and savings each month. You can compare this against previous months or select custom time frames to view.

With Emma, you can view this information based on your budget categories or for different merchants to know not only how much money went towards groceries but how much was spent at Sainsbury’s specifically.

With Emma’s true balance technology, users can discover their true spending power. Emma’s true balance shows the balance after bills so users can make smart decisions. With Emma, you also can track the progress of your spending within your budget and receive real-time notifications when you are spending too much too soon, or enable rolling budgets to transfer any leftover balance from one month to the next.

The app also allows you to view your income vs spending, and spend over time to have a better understanding of your spending.

Save Features

Both apps aim to help users manage their money more effectively to enable them to save more each month. By compiling the data from past months and creating analytics on spending habits from one month to the next, as well as, the ability to set and monitor a budget and recurring charges, Mint and Emma both help you save money.

Emma also has a designated save section in the app that features the ability to create savings pots and earn high interest paid daily so users can grow their savings right in the app.

Networth

Monitor your net worth by connecting your accounts to Emma and adding in any unlisted assets, savings, or loans like your home or car. From here Emma tracks and updates your net worth so you can have a full overview of your financial health.
