Monese is one of the best digital banks in the UK that offers multi-currency accounts and a mobile app that lets you manage your money on the go. It's a great option for people who want a fast, flexible account in the UK, whether they have a UK address or not. I'll show you how to open a bank account with Monese in six quick steps.

What do you need?

To open a Monese account in the UK, you only need one thing: your passport or national ID card. You don’t need to provide any proof of address or have a good credit history - just be at least 18 years old and live in the European Economic Area (EEA).

1. Get the Monese app

The first step is to simply download the Monese app from the App Store or Play Store for free.

2. Sign up

Once you have downloaded the app, tap on “Get started” and enter your phone number. You will receive a verification code via SMS that you need to enter in the app.

Next, you need to choose your preferred language and currency. You can choose between GBP or EUR as your main account currency. You can also open additional accounts in 14 other currencies later.

Enter your details:

  • full name
  • date of birth
  • email address
  • post code

3. Security settings

Choose a password and a PIN for your Monese account. Your security PIN should be 4 digits long and easy to remember.

4. Verify your identity

In the Monese app, you can easily verify your identity by taking a selfie and scanning your passport or national ID card. The app will guide you through the process of taking a clear photo of yourself and your document. Make sure that your document is valid, not damaged and matches your details.

5. Choose your plan

Lastly, Monese has three plans to choose from:

  • Simple (Free)
    • £200 ATM withdrawals per month
    • £2000 foreign spending currency
  • Classic (£4.95)
    • £800 ATM withdrawals per month
    • £8000 foreign spending currency
  • Premium (£14.95)
    • Unltd. ATM withdrawals per month
    • Unltd. foreign spending currency

You can compare the plan details and their features on the app but it’s best to start with the Simple account, you can upgrade it at any time later.

6. Get going!

Now you’ll have successfully opened a Monese account and can start using the app straight away. You can also order a contactless debit card that works with Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and Wise.

You can send and receive money across 30 countries with low fees and real exchange rates as well as manage your money on the go with instant notifications and basic budgeting features.

Connecting your Monese account to Emma can be beneficial for you since it allows you to take advantage of the features offered by both apps. Emma is an industry-leading budgeting and savings app that groups all your bank accounts in one place, allowing you to track and categorise all your transactions in real-time.

It helps you avoid overdraft charges, finds wasteful subscriptions and helps you build your credit history by using your rent payments. Monese, on the other hand, is a mobile banking app that can help you build credit, transfer money overseas and manage your finances easily.

By using both apps together, you get the best out of both products.
